Your chance to join the Palomino club

And as I crawl out from my box packed with straw like a Blue Peter tortoise, I find the chance for one lucky bidder to join the Palomino club! Oh Yes!

Hi! Happy, happy, happy! I've got Claude back at last!!!

We rescued him on Friday, and now he's back on the drive, looking shiny and beautiful, and sporting 2 lovely new Weber carbs that mean he moves as nice as he looks.

We're off to Wales in him tomorrow for the week, so I'll get plenty of photos and let you all see what he looks like now.

Great news about the return of Claude, it'll be really interesting to see how he looks now!
Just out of interest, how does he run with the new Weber carbs on?
Does he feel similar to drive, or quicker, more reponsive etc?
I've got some pretty major Palomino news aswell, my Volks failed the MOT about a month back, sadly she'd been stood in my Parents drive all through Winter, which had included Snow,Rain,Sun, more rain etc,etc and unfortunately it had taken it's toll.
She had a few holes in her sills and a few rusty bits underneath which needed to be sorted before we could use her again.
The local Garage, gave us details of a guy in Funtington, who specialises in Campers, so we headed down there and he quoted me about £600, which included a new tail pipe, alternator pulley,a thorough tune to reduce the exhaust emmissions and obviously the welding.
Let's just say that, like with most older vehicles, as he cut out the rot, he discovered a lot more than he first thought, 2 new front steps later and a bill of £1000! Ouch! She's back on the road, fully MOT,d and ready to roll.
I will send through the before and after pics of her work shortly.
She's just waiting on getting all her newly replaced metal being sprayed now, but i've gotta get my bank account looking a bit more healthy first!
Something great came out of the story though, after a chat with a local guy who runs a Nursery within a stones throw from my house, for £30 a Month, she now lives totally under cover in a giant greenhouse, sharing the warm, dry space with a a few other interesting vehicles,2 MGB,s A Cadillac and a variety of boats. The Volks place i went to is on the web, have a look at www.vdubcampers.com, if anyone reading this lives on the Southcoast, anywhere near Chichester, he's well worth a visit and only specialises in Campers, not even Beetles

How r all the other Palominos coming on, are they ready for Summer yet?

Take care

Alex

Polly has had some welding done, had her carbs nicely tuned up by a brilliant guy who from this day forward is to be known as "Eric - King of Carbs" and passed her MOT with no trouble at all. So good new from this end of the Palomino community.

Wow! There doesn't seem to have been any messages or feedback on here for ages, let's see if i can start the wheels rolling again! Any interesting Summer stories/mishaps or adventures? We spent about 5 days on the Isle o Wight back in August, it was the first time i'd properly used my awning and everything went really well.
In typical I O W fashion, we had torrential rain on the 1st night, but thankfully the awning stayed bone dry. The roof vent in the van started leaking, but with a few ingenious high tech modifications at 2am (a few towels underneath to soak up the drips) we were back to sleeping soundly!
We had a great time, staying at Grange Farm, visiting Alum Bay and Newport and getting away from everyday existance. We haven't used the old girl for a couple of Weeks now, as the Autumn begins to set in. Atleast i've found some nice warm dry storage for it this Winter though, lets hope it pays dividends at MOT time!

Hi!
You're right Alex - let's keep it up! I sent in a write-up about Claude and a load of photos a while ago, so hopefully they'll be on here soon.

Good to hear you've been out and about enjoying your Palomino. Have you had yours sprayed up yet? If so, it would be great to see those before and after photos. I've been out and about in Claude loads this summer/autumn - we've had such good weather here that there's hardly a weekend when I've not been somewhere in him - shows, festivals, village picnics the lot. My fiance was back from Afghanistan for September, and we took Claude to the Peak District, Northumberland and round the Cotswolds. We took him to Vanfest, but I couldn't find Polly there unfortunately - sorry, Kate!

In general Claude's behaved really well, but we've had a few niggles with the new carbs lately, although apparently they just need tuning. He's off at the end of the month to Absolute VW (East Midlands) to get his last few resoration bits completed, and then I'll have to find him somewhere to spend the winter this year.

How's Polly doing Kate, and what about your van, Ian?

We are reluctantly considering the sale of our palomino conversion 2000cc bay window vw camper 1979. It is mostly original internally but needs restoring outside with new body panels. Mechanically good. Please ring for info on 07871 679 848. Andy and Sue

Happy New Year everyone! (and a belated Merry Christmas too) Hope it was a good one!

I know Ian's been too busy to do anything with the site recently, so I've put some pics of the newly restored Claude on Flickr

http://www.flickr.com/photos/pippamurphy/

So you can see them for yourselves now! There are also some pics of Stan the Westfalia too, if you remember him!

If anyone else has any pics to share of their Palominos, it might be a good way of doing that. How's your camper's restoration work going, Alex?

This is a long shot, but worth a try!

Last Saturday(25th Sept) from a distance i saw a Yellow Palomino driving down the Horndean Road in Emsworth Hampshire, It looked in good condition and even had the luggage bars intact on the front, which so many seem to have lost,
Anyone reading this, own or know about this Palomino?
Do any of the previous Palomino owners still read this page?

Hi Alex, and anyone else out there! Great to have a comment to read at last! I know that myself, Tom from Belgium and a couple of others still check this blog from time to time, just in case.

Obviously as you know, I'm now an ex-Palomino owner, and I feel like a real traitor, but I do still love them, and one day, maybe when my situation's different, I'd love to get another one.

I saw a yellow Palomino for sale on the internet a while ago, but I haven't seen one in the flesh. I don't think many of them live up north. Claude still does, though - he's with lovely new owners over in Cheshire who really seem to be looking after him and appreciating him.

Have you finished your Palomino's restoration yet, Alex? Tom's had his restored, and it looks amazing.

Hi Pippa, how are you?
To be honest, the Yellow Palomino I saw last Saturday, is the first Type 2 Palomino i've actually seen on the road, I'm sure in the busier parts, i.e the London area etc, it would be a different story. But down here in good old sleepy Hampshire/West Sussex they're a very rare breed! I spied a Type 25 Palomino a couple of Years back, but thats all. I'm still in the process of gradually improving my Van, i've thoroughly re varnished all the woodwork inside, which is looking much better, i've removed the sky light, which leaked in heavy rain and had been previously sealed up. I found a new replacement on Justkampers which is the right diameter etc, may need a slight alteration to the depth though.
We've rubbed down the wheels and will be respraying them soon, to finish off the interior, all we will need is new seat covers and a slight repair to the lining just underneath the smal oval windows. Then it'll be a complete respray. After that, it'll be pretty much immaculate,
Glad to hear Claude is being looked after and cherished,
