Summer time and the living is easy

As Alex rightly points out, summer appears to be here, and so it's time for both Palominos and lesser campers to be woken from hibernation.

He also asks if anyone has an awning. Fortuitously, Pippa has sent me a picture of just that. Roj and Mandy have one, and they've asked how to join the palomino club.

Roj and Mandy, I've good news for you. Owning a Palomino, and asking is all you need to do! (Non-owners, by discretion). Hopefully you can find something useful here.

Thanks all

Hi Roj and Mandy
Good to meet you the other day, Mandy, and I hope your Kentucky was worth the trek, Roj - you didn't have to go all the way to Scunny, did you? I couldn't believe it when we got back to the van only to see another Palomino had arrived in the meantime - and so close to home too! It was a photo opportunity that couldn't be missed! I didn't know you could camp overnight at Normanby Hall, but I will definitely give it a go - it's a lovely place.

Alex, yes, I'm still planning to go to Beachbuggin', as long as I can get Claude's oil leak fixed, plus a possible petrol leak too. Otherwise the fumes would finish me off on a journey of that length! He's in the garage getting his engine taken out on Friday so hopefully they'll get it all fixed.

Will you be there too? Next ambition - get at least 3 Palominos together!

Forgot to say... Alex, if you're talking about drive-away awnings, I would definitely recommend getting one. The one I have currently is from www.campershop.co.uk. It's a big green tunnel-style awning - loads of space, an inner sleeping tent, windows, a porch etc, etc for only £130, which is a bargain. Quite easy to put up too, but you do need at least 2 people.

So, because it looks like I may have to go to Vanfest and possibly even Beachbuggin' on my own, I'm now going to get a Khyam Motordome from www.fishbrain.biz. because apparently I'll be able to put up one of these awnings single-handed! I saw one at the Bustypes show, and they look nice too. Expensive though.

Just one issue with our vans - normally the awning attaches to a VW camper via a pole that fits into the gutter, but because the fixed roof takes up all the gutter-space, you'd have to buy 3 x figure-of-eight strips (cheap, from Campershop or Just Kampers)to attach it properly.

I've been having a spot of bother recently, can anyone out there offer any advice?
The alternator light started glowing dimly on my bus so after a few checks, a slack alternator drive belt was diagnosed as the problem. The alternator adjustment won't budge and to make matters worse i can't seem to find an alternator belt like the original, all of the ones supplied by GSF have teeth that are too fat. I put it in to a local garage to try and budge the alternator adjustment but after attempting it with air tools and all sorts, they've chewed the bolt up and were un successful! Nightmare! Help!

Problem solved!!

After the fiasco at the local garage, i got in contact with Beetlewerks in Angmering(near Arundel) They sorted it all out and put in a new alternator adjustment bolt, it pays to get tricky jobs done by the Vw pros!
If anyone reading this lives anywhere near the South coast , i highly recommend them! Have a look at them on the net.

I agree with you there, Alex - some things are definitely worth leaving to the experts. Despite the 50-mile drive, I take Claude to the Herbie Hospital in Leeds, and I'd recommend them to anyone up here in the north. They only work on classic air-cooled VWs, and although they're not the cheapest, they really know their stuff. When I first got my van, I took him to an ordinary garage nearby, but the guy wasn't even sure what an air-cooled engine was!

So, I'm glad you got fixed up, but if you're struggling to get any specific spares in the near future, let me know - if I can get you what you need from Volksheaven in Doncaster, I could bring them down for you to Beachbuggin' in August.

In the meantime, let's hope this weather clears up - I can't wait to get out in my van again!
