does anyone know if you can buy the rubber seals for the small side windows either side of the roof? one of the seals is leaking on my bus.

if you cant get the proper seals, has anyone got any experience with those generic window seals you can buy by the metre? are they any good?

any other recommendations?

cheers

ian said...

My general solution to leaks is a tube of that sticky stuff that goes round the edge of your bath. However, less bodgy solutions may also exist

pippa said...

Well, the bathroom-type sealant that Ian mentions might be a bodgy solution, but it seems to work on both of my roof windows. This must be a common problem with these vans - the seals on both windows seems to have shrunk, leaving a gap at the top, which a past owner has filled in with sealant. There are no leaks now, so it obviously works, but if you do find any kind of proper replacement seal, or even a good substitute, I'd be keen to find out!

Hello all? We have just returned from Van types in Oswestry where we met Pippa and co. We have a bay window Palomino known rather imaginatively as "the Van" I know, dull really. Anyway, we have owned the van since 2004 and have travelled all over the shop in it. It's never given a moments trouble despite still having the original engine. The rest of the van is original also. The paint looks a little jaded and there is rust showing here and there, but none the less we would not change it. Now to business, we have the original VW palomino "Operating Instructions" as issued by Barbarian limited, Newton Abbot, Devon. we also have copies of the manufacturers instructions for the Pla-cool air conditioner and Electrolux fridge as fitted to Palomonos. Our van has underfloor heating and an air con unit. (which in reality is just a big fan. Great to see that there is now a site dedicated to the Palomino. In my humble opinion probably the best conversion out there, plus you get a groovy roof.
All the best, Paul and family, West Wales.

Not sure what a Palomono is. Doh!

ian said...

Hi Paul

Ooh, that is interesting! I don't suppose you have access to a scanner?

And an air conditioned one. That I'd be interested to see. Where does the air con unit sit?

You're quite right, of course. The Palomino is the finest conversion.

Pippa. You have done well! I hope you've got pictures.

Hi Paul and Co!
Welcome to the club! It was great to meet you all on Saturday, and I couldn't believe my luck at seeing another Palomino at last - it really made my day!

I'd be very keen to see copies of all the instructions if there's some way you can send them in - you've seen how little I know about my own van!(And I STILL can't figure out that fridge!)

As promised, I've been working on a design for a Palomino Club window sticker, which I'll run past Ian for approval. It's nothing flash, but I've done some girly grovelling round one of the Printers I use, and he'll print them for us free of charge.

As for your van's name, with that cool registration, you could always call it "Kenny"!

Ian, Paul kindly let me take pics of their van, and I've sent them on to you.

Hi - I used to own a Palomino and I had to sell it to buy a modern Motorhome (what a soul selling low life!). It broke my heart to sell it, especially as the owner has tragically chopped the roof off it to fit a poxy sliding sunroof. I have pictures I can send - we covered over 25,000 miles in 5 years, and it only ever let us down once! It is indeed a great conversion - I could stand up in it, even at 6 foot 3"! Kev from Hinckley, Leics

pippa said...

Hi Kev!
I'm assuming you're the former Palomino owners we met last weekend - Tarka's owners? You, Paul and Ian are so right; it's got to be the most useable, well-planned conversion there was. The modern Ducatos might be nice, but they just don't have the same character!

It's such a shame about your ex-van. Have you seen the pictures of another Palomino decapitation, in this month's entry titled 'Rebirth of a Palomino'?

It would be great to see your pictures - there's an email address at the bottom of the club pages to send them to. (Does it definitely work, Ian?)

Paul - have you found a way of scanning in your instruction booklets yet? If so, I'd love to see them.

Hello i'm not sure if i'm typing in the correct section here or not but hopefully one of you will help. We've the pleasure of owning a palomino too although we didn't know this until saturday 2/6/07 when a lady from epworth (i think) parked next to us at normandy hall in a blue left hand drive version and took some pics of our campers together i think the lady took my email as i wasn't there at the time unfortunately and only my wife spoke to her.I'd like very much a copy of the pics and also some information on joining the club and hopefully exchange info as needed with other owners who share both the pain and the joy of owning a vehicle that draws attention wherever it goes thanks all Roj an Mandy

Hi all
I have just purchased a 78 palomino in a right state. The roof was removed :0 as the last owner said it looked like a ice cream van.He has tried to tin the roof and made a mess.Im sure the original roof would be hard to source so does anyone have any ideas.Oh and is she worthy of club status.
cheers Neil

pippa said...

Hi Neil!
What a shame - another headless Palomino! At least you sound as if you wish it hadn't been done, which surely qualifies you for membership of the club!

There's a bit of a "marmite syndrome" going on about Palominos - it seems people either love 'em or hate 'em. But judging by the compliments I've received about my van's appearance lately, I'd say there are plenty of people in the first category!

Looks like you'll have to get a pop top roof put in now. I'm sure you'll never get a replacement. But please send some pictures in - I'm dying to see what she looks like!

Before I found your Blog I have no idea about this adaptation.

I´m thinking to make a note in my blog about the Palomino.

HI, i,ve just bought a 1977 bay vw palomino
off e-bay for £335,
it needs alot of work, body, interior but mainly body,
it came with a few parts sink, cooker a couple of cabinets but no beds or bunks.
hopefully it should take me about 12 month to get it back together and on the road, so any help trying to sorce part for the interior would be great
cheers veedubman

pippa said...

Hi Veedubman!
Welcome to the world of Palomino ownership!

Am I reading that right - £335? I can't beleive it! You've bagged an absolute bargain! Please email some pictures to Ian so we can see your new project, and it would be great if you could give us a regular update on how the renovations are coming along.

Also, that's a new bit of info about Palominos - I had no idea they were being converted as early as 1977. You can get the bunks quite easily - see some of the comments from Alex on other posts - and I think a standard three quarter rock n roll bed would fit. If you need any photos of any of the parts/cabinets etc to get some replacements made, just give us a shout - I think just about all of our email addresses are on the site now.

Great to hear from yet another owner!

cheers for that, it came with a whole lot of other gadgets
i think one was a home made item which warns you of all sorts of things oil, temp, petrol.
i,ll try to get some pics e-mailed to ian as soon as pos
thanks again

But from the pictures we've seen online, the interior seems very original and its got bunk beds etc. We'll post some pics as soon as its home.

Hello Linz 'n' Andee, and Gemma!
Welcome to the club!

It was good to see 2 other Palominos at Glastonbury - I didn't even see that many at Vanfest last year! Is the sticker in the window yet, guys? :)

And while I'm on the topic of Vanfest, I'm still actively recruiting for this year's show if any of our newer Palomino recruits are interested! If you've never been, you really will have an excellent time - especially if there's a few of us there to get those heads turning!

Gemma, your new Palomino sounds rather interesting - is it a bay or a T25? You'll have to send some pics in to Ian, and let us see!

Great to have more new Palominos on board!

gemma said...

He's a 1979, rhd bay, with a 2litre engine. Can't wait to pick him up tomorrow and pics will follow soon.

We used to have a Palomino conversion, a bay camper, 1979. Wonderful van, and we have some awesome memories of travelling in her. I'll have to dig out some of our photos. We had her for several years, living in Scotland and travelling Europe. Then for some idiotic reason we sold her (in those days campers were pretty cheap and we bought another one when we got home to NZ). If only we'd kept her...

pippa said...

Hi Karen and Colin!
Great to have more international Palomino fans! I'm sure we'd all love to see the pictures of your camper, if you could email them to Ian. How long ago did you have your Palomino?

Yes, it's a shame you had to sell her - I bet there are no Palominos over there in New Zealand! By the way, what's the VW camper scene like over there? Are they popular?

Look forward to the pics!
Pippa

Hi is anyone still posting here, we bought a 1980 aircooled T25 last week, all original. I now realise it is a Palomino -Heritage conversion, all in great condition. Not worked out whether there had been original bunks at top. Interior is identical to the Heritage brochure, including the bar from side to side at the top. Not sure what that is about!? Would be nice to hear from other owners. Thanks Tina
