Book Review: VW Camper, the Inside Story

Amongst my Christmas presents was David Eccles' book VW Camper, The Inside Story (or to give it its full title, ...A Guide to the Various Camping Conversions and Interior Layouts Used for VW Campers 1951-2005). And I must mention I'm grateful, because I did ask for it specifically.

If you're interested in the minutiae of Westfalia paint codes, then this is an excellent book. But for the Palomino owner, it's a bleak desert without a single Oasis. Not a single mention of the world's finest camper.

Eccles does mention that it would, of course, be impossible to document each and every permutation of camper over the years, but he has managed to cover some pretty eccentric and eclectic conversions in preference to our beloved Palomino. So for the Palomino owner, not recommended.

Hi Ian
Well, recommended or not, this book was one of my presents too! It's an interesting read, but as you say, not a whiff of Palomino anywhere. In fact, high tops in general get pretty short shrift. But the author does seem to be keen on including original brochures of a number of different conversions and so, as you are in possession of both an original Palomino brochure AND an original-condition van, maybe you could contact Mr Eccles and ensure the inclusion of the mighty Palomino in any future edition! Naturally, hero status would be guaranteed!

But to continue with the book review theme: I also received another book - "The Essential Buyer's Guide - Volkswagen Bus" (Veloce). It's a really useful little book for people like me who don't know their outriggers from their torsion bars, and gives simple advice on what to look for when buying a VW camper. However, it would obviously more use BEFORE you've bought your van!
